Ewing family papers, 1792-1885 1830-1853.

The Ewing Family Papers date from 1792-1885 and consist of certificates, legal commissions, a way-bill from New York to Stroudsburg, and one letter from R.B. Potter to an unnamed Judge, giving genealogical information (birth dates and locations) for Charles Ewing and his parents. The papers also include one folder of correspondence concerning a testimonial dinner given for Peter D. Vroom, Jr. in 1853 by the New Jersey Bar.

Charles Ewing, jurist, was born in Burlington County, N.J., July 8, 1780, and died in Trenton, N.J., August 5, 1832. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1798, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1802, and practiced in Trenton. New Jersey lawyer, politician, and diplomat. In 1838 he was elected to Congress, but because of irregularities in the returns, he and several other winning candidates were not confirmed. Charles Ewing, the son of Martha Boyd and James Ewing, was born in 1780 in Bridgeton, New Jersey. He was a lawyer, the Recorder of the City of Trenton, a Commissioner to Revise the Laws of New Jersey, the Director of the Trenton Banking Company, and the Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court.
